Driving

Getting to Nukuhakari Station

Arrival time is between 3 - 6pm. To minimize traffic and enhance safety we strongly recommend carpooling.  Additionally be prepared for limited mobile coverage on the road once you reach Mangatoa road or if coming from the other direction you will lose coverage outside of Waitomo.

Please have downloaded the directions before you do.  Our country roads are narrow and windy and can have big trucks on them.  Please ensure you stick to your side of the road, drive carefully and slowly and remain alert for oncoming vehicles.

You can get to Nuku Walk via 2 routes. The first is driving toward Awakino, turning onto Manganui road.  Continue for around 30 min until there is a turn off to your left to Waikawau road.

Alternatively you can come from the opposite direction toward Marokopa (note: this route has a portion of metal road), turn up the hill to your left onto Mangatoa road.  Continue around 30 min until the road to your right is Waikawau road.  Cross the small bridge and the Red Cottage, night 1 of Nuku Walk at 4 Waikawau road is directly on your right. Next door to Whareorino School!

Transfers via Helicopter

Getting Here by Helicopter

We partner with Rotor Work Ltd to provide optional transfers from both their base in Kihikihi and also Hamilton airports. Their helicopters can carry up to five passengers at a time. For groups of around ten, we suggest travelling in two cars with five people in each. One car can be left at the airport while the other continues on to Nuku Walk. The group who arrive by car can then enjoy the helicopter flight back to the airport at the end of their walk. This approach shares both the cost and the experience across the whole group.

For current pricing or a tailored quote, please contact Rotor Work Ltd directly, as flight costs can vary throughout the year. Contact Trent: trent@rotorwork.co.nz

Flying

Getting Here by Air

The nearest airport to Nuku Walk is New Plymouth, around 1.5 hours from the Red Cottage, your first nights accommodation on Nuku Walk. Alternatively Hamilton Airport is 2hr 20.

Most of our walkers who are flying need to hire a car and drive to us to commence your stay.  We offer accommodation and meals so you can rest before commencing your walk the following morning.  This will give you ample time to travel and ensure you are rested and ready for the journey ahead.

The walk finishes early or midday on the final day, so please ensure you leave sufficient travel and check in time before booking your flight back home.
